CHAPTER SEVEN
“We’ll just tell them that we are exhausted,” Alta offered. “I can call them at six, tell them we’re all beat, and to go ahead without us.”
“That won’t work,” I grumbled. “They’ll just get the food to go and bring it here.”
“I’ve got it!” Woody snapped his fingers. “I’ll tell them we have an emergency at the store!”
Louis arched one eyebrow. “Really? Like a yarn emergency? What kind of emergency can you have at a yarn shop?”
Monty spoke up, “What if Jackson and I go and set the restaurant on fire?”
Jackson sat up straight, nodding eagerly.
“Forget it!” I said. “We’re assassins, not arsonists. Tonight will be complicated enough.”
“We could drug them,” Louis said slowly. “Then they’d pass out and not wake up until tomorrow.”
“That won’t work,” I said. “Drugging them would be next to impossible, and when they woke up and discussed it with each other, they’d figure out what happened.”
“Sorry,” Sofia appeared in the loft.
Alta threw her arms around the girl. “It’s okay. What happened?”
“They gave me the slip. I had them totally hooked, telling them all about that new llama/cashmere blend yarn we have, when Woody demanded I come into his office.”
We all turned to look at Woody.
“There’s an office downstairs?” I frowned.
Sofia nodded in Woody’s direction, “He partitioned off a spot in the back. You guys didn’t see it because he camouflaged it with a bookcase full of yarn.”
“Why did you pull Sofia away from our parents?” Louis asked.
Woody went from green to pale. “I just wanted to tell her we’d gotten a message and that I was going upstairs.”
I collapsed onto the sofa. “Well, that’s it. We’re screwed. No way we can miss this dinner and no way we can catch Vic. We have to call G2 and tell them we will come up with another plan to take him another time.”
“Are you kidding?” Louis went sort of bug-eyed. “Bombays have never had that option. We can’t do that. We have to find a way.”
“Maybe we can say that Romi and I are sick? If two of us are missing at dinner, maybe they won’t mind?” Alta looked doubtful even as she said it.
“You two can’t catch him and hold him all night on your own,” Woody said.
“We have to do something,” I said. “Somehow we have to get out of dinner without raising suspicion.”
Monty began laughing causing us to all stare at him. “I’ve got it! I know exactly what to do…”
